Arctic and Antarctic Animals

This week we turned our attention to animals that live near the top and bottom of our world.

We read about penguins and learned the father takes care of the egg for about 2 months. He keeps it warm using his feet and tucking it under his tummy. We tried balancing an egg on our feet--it was difficult.

We compared our heights to an adult male Emperor penguin. Most of the children were shorter but a few were taller or about the same size. We made a book about it.

We also had fun with the arctic theme and went "penguin" bowling, "ice" fishing, and and played with penguin finger puppets. When bowling we rolled, counted how many tipped over, and wrote the number on the board.

 Sorting fish by kind

Making a wider line so we could see it better.
Adding a line to show where others could wait their turn.

There was still lots of building, creating, and pretending with our classmates too. Friday made a couple batches of play dough and cleaned the tables with shaving cream--so much sensory fun!

 Designed his own drum set

Next week we will be reading stories by Mo Willems--one of my favorite authors!!!!
