Farm Unit week 2

We started our week with the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We made and used puppets to retell it and we went outside to act it out on the wooden bridge on the playground.

Wednesday our BookWorm Reader volunteers read us a story called What Will the Weather Be Today?. That proved to be a very timely book. Thursday the afternoon children participated in the school (and statewide) tornado drill. Friday morning the AM class watched some weather extremes--sky dark as night and marble sized hail.

I noticed the sky while one child was counting how many children were here.
 We all went to see.
Moments later the sky lightened again and it started hailing.
My brave learning assistant ran out to grab a few hailstones so we could explore them close up.
Size comparison before they melted in the children's hands.

After the weather story we did an experiment to make rain in a jar. There was a shaving cream cloud and we added colored water a drop at a time. As the "cloud" got heavier the rain started to drip through. We extended the activity by mixing the colors. To clean up we covered the table with shaving cream and the children rubbed & scrubbed and then tried writing and drawing.

We used a glove to simulate milking a cow. Some were a bit leery but most LOVED the sensory experience.

Our cooking activity this week was pigs in a blanket. Partners worked together to cut a hot dog and crescent roll in half. They each rolled up their own.

One child asked if we could go to a farm for a field trip. When I had to say that wasn't part of the plan, she made a plan and drew it out for me. First we get on the bus and follow the path of squares to get there. The X marks the spot where we will dig for buried treasure. Then we go to the farm and later there is a cave we can hide in.

We had other non-farm related fun with our friends too.

One child opened a "facing painting shop"with markers.

Next week will be Recycling/Taking Care of the Earth.
